Jan Schrüllkamp

What particularly fascinates you about music? Music has countless facets that fascinate me. It is capable of triggering emotions such as joy, sadness or melancholy. But music can also be surprising or humorous and manages to completely captivate you. I often associate music with memories and am always surprised by the emotions and thoughts that certain pieces can evoke in me when I listen to them.
Which musician has personally influenced you the most so far? There are far too many that have really influenced me. The three most important ones for me are probably Adam Rogers, John Coltrane and Pat Metheny.
Which band/soloists have you always wanted to be on stage with? Preferably with the John Coltrane Quartet from the 60s. In my opinion, the band always pushed the boundaries of musical possibilities. Every recording by the quartet has an incredible energy and creativity. I imagine being on stage with this formation to be incredibly exciting and inspiring.
What is your life like outside of music? For me, there is somehow no real life without music. When I'm not making music myself, I teach guitar or try to do a bit of sport. But even then, I always have music buzzing around in my head. So music accompanies me almost always and everywhere, so there's hardly anything for me that doesn't have something to do with music.
Jan Schrüllkamp, born in 1998, is a German guitarist and composer. He started playing the guitar at the age of 15. Initially at home in rock music, he found his way to jazz via the blues. His guitar teacher Peter Autschbach, who carefully introduced him to jazz, was a decisive influence.
After graduating from high school in 2018, he began studying jazz guitar at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen in 2019. During his studies, he was involved in numerous projects. Among other things, he worked on the album production of his former teacher Peter Autschbach and performed on stage with Helge Schneider together with the Folkwang Jazz Orchestra in the summer of 2023.
At the same time, he founded his own band, the Jan Schrüllkamp Quintet. He recorded his first album with this ensemble at the renowned Bauer Studios in Ludwigsburg in November 2022. The debut album “Fractured” was released by Neuklang Records in April 2024. He also played a concert with his quintet as part of WDR3 Campus Jazz, which was recorded live and broadcast on WDR3. Since 2023, he has also been a permanent member of the Simon Kuhn Quartet, with whom he won the Dörkenstiftung Sponsorship Award in 2024.
