Paul Küppers

What fascinates you most about music? What fascinates me about music is that it's a universal language that most people have access to. Music is multi-layered, springs from many different traditions and connects people - be it as an audience at a wide variety of concerts, as musicians in the orchestra or at jam sessions.

Which musician has influenced you the most so far? It kind of keeps changing and not naming all the other heroes/heroines feels a bit wrong, but: John Coltrane. Coltrane's music - especially his work from 1960-1965 - is very powerful, virtuosic, spiritual, emotional. When I first heard »Blue Train«, I thought: "I didn't even know I needed this music!" That was in 2017. Today I am still in love with his music and enjoy studying it privately.

With which band/soloists have you always wanted to be on stage? Roy Haynes, MonoNeon, Kenny Garret would be three from USA. Within the German jazz scene Uli Hübner, Petter Eldh and Otis Sandsjö.

What is your life outside of music like? I like going out, meeting my friends, spending time with my girlfriend and chatting about art, politics and society. I love going to museums, have a coffee obsession and am very interested in psychology.
