LOVE by Merlin Hellenkamp & Friends
The winner of the Young Jazz Talent Award 2022 Merlin Hellenkamp presents himself in a five-piece band in renowned German jazz clubs.
The programme developed by Merlin is entitled LOVE – an overall musical concept about infatuation and disillusionment, about strife and loss, based on »Love Supreme« by John Coltrane from 1965.
The composition contains stylistic elements such as modal jazz, hardbop and free jazz, which are integrated into an overall concept as in Trane's suite. The boundaries between composition and improvisation blur again and again unexpectedly and in some passages hardly perceptibly.
Merlin was able to recruit excellent musicians for his touring band: Ryan Carniaux on trumpet, Orest Filipov on saxophone, Nicklas John on piano, Genevieve O’Driscoll on double bass; Merlin Hellenkamp on drums. Their home is the Folkwang University of the Arts, Essen.
